Falls Incline Railway

At 62 seconds, it's the quickest rail ride in the world, and at 59.8 metres (196 feet), it's probably the shortest, but for people like me with a mobility handicap, it's a welcome asset to enjoy on opening day.

At a ceremonial public launch, Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Chan, Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor and Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) Chair Janice Thomson welcomed visitors to ride on the redeveloped Falls Incline Railway. It improves the links and service between Niagara Parks on the lower level and the Fallsview tourist area above.

"It enables more people of all ages, families with strollers and persons with disabilities to make safer trips up and down the two levels of the escarpment in greater comfort," said Mr. Chan. And for me, it's an opportunity to take a picture of the brink of the falls.

NPC Chair, Janice Thomson, explained that " The Niagara Parks Commission undertook this project as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the overall visitor experience and accessibility for those wishing to visit Niagara Parks and Niagara Falls as a 'year round' destination."

The original NPC Falls Incline was built in 1966 and only available seasonally. NPC undertook this redevelopment of the incline in order to provide year-round service, and more importantly, allow visitors with disabilities and families with children, full and safe access to visit and view both Niagara Parks and Niagara Falls.

This effort to improve accessibility was recognized when the Commission received an Ontario March of Dimes Breaking the Barrier award, during National Access Awareness Week.

Two cars work in tandem, one moving up as the other descends with up to 40 passengers. There are seats in the front and open areas in the rear of each car that will accommodate two wheelchairs/scooters.

Bravo Niagara Parks!
