The Niagara Blog:     Niagara's Favourite Five Signature Holes

Grand Niagara Golf Club
Grand Niagara Golf Club - 4th hole

What's a signature hole? Think Pebble Beach's 543-yards, crescent-shaped challenge along the Pacific's outcrop of jutting rocks, the sea swelling, boiling and tumbling into frothy waves. There are impressive signature holes also in Niagara, and here are favourites from local duffers surveyed for their top five picks:

1. Grand Niagara Golf Club, 4th hole, par 5: Designer Rees Jones offers a 7,425-yard course, mixing tall fescue grasses, sparkling ponds and trees that flank fairways composed of open, rolling terrain. The lush, green fairways with numerous lakes and myriad bunkers offer inspiring views, many greens reflecting his two-tiered trademark, gently sloped and contoured, rolling true but not too fast. A mature stand of Carolinian oak provides #4 with its real character, explains Bob Culig PGA Head Golf Professional. Golfers hit over water, and should play safe, an inviting pond situated 200 yards from the hole. "When the Canadian Tour played here, only 3 or 4 pros hit the green in two strokes to putt on the 6,800 square foot carpet." Battlefield Golf Course

2. Legends on the Niagara: Battlefield Golf Course, 18th hole, par 5: Water in the form of a 19-acre lake accompanies this 556-yard hole from the tee-deck and along the right side to the massive, undulating green, curling in behind. The shortest distance to the green is along the hazardous right hand water side, while up to ten bunkers greet second iron shots and those who choose to approach from the safer left side. All holes are available to view on the website thanks to the neat "Heli Guide." Contact information: Address: 9172 Willoughby Dr., Niagara Falls, Ontario, L2G 7Y4 Phone: (866) 465-3642

Peninsula Lake Golf Club

3. Peninsula Lake Golf Club: Hillside 9, 4th hole, par 4: The Hillside Course (3,260 yards, par 36) is adjacent to the clubhouse and the Quarry Course and completes the original 18-hole layout. # 4 is built between the lakes, so the ball must fly true and straight. Thundering Waters Golf Club 4. Thundering Waters Golf Club, 11th hole, par 3: reflects John Daly's prodigious length and a risk-reward style that produces remarkable or disastrous results. Playing as long as 7,322 yards from the championship tees, the par 72 course offers fourteen holes that wind through mature woodland. #11 is the easiest handicap hole (18) yet psychologically the hardest at a mere 287-328 yards. The green undulates, sloping back to front, but the big barrier is omnipresent water lurking from tee to green. Niagara Parks Whirlpool Golf Course 5. Niagara Parks Whirlpool Golf Course, 2nd hole, par 4: The Niagara Parks Commission captured a remarkable three out of our top five slots. Against the backdrop of the Niagara River whirlpool and gorge, the course was designed by Stanley Thompson. Club pro, Rob Ward, describes five sets of tee-blocks that are available, the longest at 415 yards with the ladies' situated at 327 yards. This hole is the number one handicap hole, the most difficult for men and #2 for women. The man-made pond on the green's right suggests a 3-wood tee-shot (255 yards) then a pitching wedge for 140 yards. This hole requires length and accuracy, the fairway lined with trees on both sides and the pond.
