Our Room
We stayed for two nights at The 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel, recently awarded Four Diamond status from the Automobile Association of America (AAA). We had a "King with Sofa" room that featured truly comfortable pillows and lots of them, along with the usual accoutrements - flat panel television, iron and ironing board, hair dryer and free high speed wireless internet service.

The hotel decor celebrates Clayton, New York's maritime history with photos of the old steamships on the walls, and, enticing one to linger outside on the patio, are flaming fire pits that were well used during our stay, a lovely way to relax and chat under the stars. With the view of the St. Lawrence River, my only regret is that we did not have a balcony.

Hotel Features & History
The most striking feature of the hotel is the beautiful view of the St. Lawrence River! The hotel also featured 100% non-smoking, a fitness center, an indoor heated pool, Jacuzzi, business center, and for the nautically inclined, boat docks.

The hotel property was previously owned by Carl Frink, owner of the Frink Snow Plow Company, credited with having created the double-winged V-Plow to save us from snowstorms.

In its heyday, serving the likes of those who lived on Millionaire's Row along the St. Lawrence, The Clayton Railway Station served as the terminus for the Philadelphia and New York Railways. Ah, the Gilded Age!

For dining, there's The Seaway Grille and 1000 Islands Bar and in the summer months, The Riverside Patio where we ate lunch and supper, both delicious meals with great service. To our amusement, we watched artificial owls rotate their heads 360 degrees perched atop pergolas, craftily designed to keep away hungry seagulls.

The Seaway Grille looked like an upscale dining experience and the 1000 Islands Bar is quite attractive; however, the patio offered us incredible panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River which we took advantage of at each meal.

For supper, I had the Filet Mignon 8 oz. tenderloin served au poivre demi-glace and rosemary-gouda potato gratin. The steak was great, the potatoes so-so. My wife enjoyed the Grilled Atlantic Salmon with grilled mango jalapeno salsa and fennel-corn risotto which she loved.

The hotel opened in 2014, sitting on prime waterfront in the slow-moving village of Clayton. The staff is well trained and cordial, always greeting one with a smile and complimentary morning coffee offered on each floor in the morning along with a newspaper (yes, some of us still read newspapers), was a nice touch.

Nearby Attractions
Located close by to the hotel, one can visit The Clayton Opera House (http://www.claytonoperahouse.com/) (nothing playing while we were there) and the Antique Boat Museum (http://www.abm.org/), the largest collection of antique boats in North America, a real treat.

In nearby Alexandria Bay, 20 minutes away, one can take Uncle Sam's 1,000 Islands boat rides (http://usboattours.com/1000islands/ ) to both Boldt Castle and Singer Castle to check out how the rich and famous lived.

If you go
The Village of Clayton, nearby Cape Vincent, NY, and Alexandria Bay, NY are popular tourist destinations on the New York mainland side of the Thousand Islands region. In 1872, the community of Clayton voted to set itself apart from the town of Clayton by incorporating as a village. A ferry once connected Clayton with Gananoque in Ontario, but was discontinued due to the construction of the Thousand Islands Bridge ten miles down-river. This bridge now carries Interstate 81 to Canada. New York State Route 12E, which follows the south bank of the St. Lawrence River, intersects north-south New York State Route 12 at Clayton village. New York State Route 180 crosses the southeast corner of Clayton.
