The Niagara Blog:     It's Icewine Time in Niagara!

Niagara Icewine Festival Yes, it's time to get out your tuque, warm winter gloves and maybe your long johns (the way our weather is going), and get ready to help celebrate this year's 19th annual Niagara Icewine Festival from January 10-26.

As usual, weekend events are staged at Twenty Valley (Jordan Village) Jan 11-12 and at Niagara on the Lake, January 18-19.

You can savour great Icewine in tasting tours of some of the world's best Icewine producing wineries in the world. Wineries offer wine and food pairings as part of the festival. Forty wineries from across Niagara will participate.

Niagara Icewine Festival To produce ice-wine, select grapes are left on the vine through the winter months to help intensify the natural sugars and flavour of the grape, thus concentrating the juice; the grapes are carefully picked most usually at night when temperatures drop below a set freezing point (-8C) for a sustained period. (2-3 days) The harvested grapes are pressed, yielding both a prized and a pricy product.

Besides the above, other key events are as follows:
Xerox Icewine Gala: A Bacchus Evening of Icewine & Revelry, January 10, 08:00 PM to 11:00 PM, showcasing wines from 40 Niagara wineries and features Canada's largest tasting of internationally acclaimed VQA Icewines and table wines. Combined with exemplary Niagara cuisine prepared by Fallsview Casino's top chefs as well as outstanding entertainment and an incredible silent auction! Fallsview Casino Resort, Niagara Falls: $185 plus HST

The "Discovery Pass Food & Wine Pairings" is available for January 10-12, 17-19, 24-26, for $40.00 plus HST and the participating wineries are listed at: http://www.niagarawinefestival.com/page/icewine_dp_listings
