Black-market money exchange pro's and con's

One benefit vis-a-vis banks is that an exchange is often more convenient in terms of time and place. However, in some countries, the legal system is harsh and one may be subjected to trouble if caught.

Make sure you know what the local notes look like and are given the correct money. I witnessed a "mistake" at the airport in Amman, Jordan from an approved exchange; therefore, be careful on the street.

Some precautions:
  1. If a money changer tries to short you, walk away and find another.

  2. Do not carry or show more cash than you intend to exchange.

  3. Check the bank exchange rate as there may be no real benefit on the street.
