Next year, the War of 1812 will continue unabated in Niagara, but on water, it will be between two American entities, Hornblower Niagara Cruises from San Francisco and The Maid of the Mist Steamship Company owned by the Glynn family from Lewiston, NY. They will face off daily at the base of the Falls, each employing their own vessels to take tourists close to the brink.

The first of the two Hornblower catamarans has recently been completed and will soon be transported to Niagara Falls, Ontario. Hornblower will run its 700-passenger boats from the Canadian shoreline while the Maid of the Mist runs theirs from the American side.

Built by Hike Metal, based in Wheatley, ON, the Hornblower catamarans weigh 110 tons each. They are 85-feet long by 33-feet wide. They feature raised viewing platforms on the upper deck, open decks and enclosed walls for dry observation points. Hornblower intends to offer morning, afternoon, evening, Falls illumination and fireworks boat tours.

These vessels are built with steel hulls and aluminum superstructures. Propulsion is by twin screw conventional shafts. The unique feature of this project is that the hull and superstructure are constructed in bolted sections to enable delivery and re-assembly in the lower Niagara River Gorge. The vessels will take tourists for excursion rides under the mighty Niagara Falls from May until October.       -    Read more
