Running of the Brides event to benefit Wellspring Niagara

Kathy White of Niagara Falls and Kim Cartmell of Stevensville noticed they were answering more and more questions from women considering getting married in Niagara. Thus, in 2009 they formed www.Elopeniagara.com, a website offering a wealth of information for soon-to-be brides planning weddings. Based on a similar event in 2009 in the Netherlands, when 99 women in gowns chased down one 'groom,' the Niagara event is the brainchild of the wedding photographers.

The inaugural Running of the Brides event Aug. 14 will see dozens of women in used matrimonial gowns and running shoes chasing a high-profile 'groom' - 105.7 EZ Rock FM radio personality Brett Ness - in front of the Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls to be followed by a quick trip on a double-decker bus to Sherkston Shores, where the women will pile into Lake Erie in their gowns for a 'Trash the Dress' session and a cake fight. How can one lose in a cake fight? Besides assisting a charity, the event should help to reinforce Niagara's reputation as a world-class locale in which to get married. Personally, I think that brides should hang on to their dresses. Our children seemed to enjoy wearing my wife's wedding dress on Halloween. This might give rise, I suppose, to another running event. the "Running of the Headless Spouse" or perhaps the "Haunted Groom."
