Cuvée 2011: they poured; I drank
They poured; I drank. There was a lot of pouring, but I was careful to employ the handy spittoon located at each table. Otherwise, I would certainly require a taxi to ferry me back home. I stuck to white wines sampling Niagara Chardonnay and Riesling, and after sampling, I heartily agree with the St. Catharine's Standard wine writer, Monique Beech - Niagara Rieslings are splendid. I will stick with New Zealand for Chardonnay.
The 23rd annual awards night celebration recognizes the very best in Ontario's wine industry, the so-called Oscars of the Ontario wine world. Held at the glitzy Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, 62 provincial wineries submitted 270 wines for judging, each allowed to submit four of its best wines. Awards were followed by a gala featuring the food of seven top Niagara chefs paired with wines entered in Cuvée.
On this evening, I was witness to a strange event, a Cuvée win for a non-existent winery. Virtual winery, Twenty Twenty-Seven Cellars, captured first prize for its 2009 Fox Croft Vineyard Riesling. They represent a bizarre trend in contemporary operations - existing solely online. The Beamsville-based business ships wine directly to customers and uses winemaking space from Vineland's Featherstone Estate Winery to produce its Riesling and Pinot Noir.
Owner and winemaker, Kevin Panagapka, was among 22 wineries honoured at the 23rd annual awards night. Another virtual operation, Nyarai Cellars, run from Calamus Estate Winery in Jordan, captured the top red assemblage prize for its 2007 Veritas. Winemaker Steve Byfield was thrilled with his first Cuvée award. Far from virtual with its distinctive long mauve wall that juts towards Niagara District Airport, Bill Redelmeier, owner of Niagara-on-the-Lake's Southbrook Vineyards, was awarded the Tony Aspler Cuvée Award of Excellence for his work promoting the Ontario wine industry abroad. And Jordan's Creekside Estate Winery emerged as one of the biggest winners, nailing three awards.
Proceeds from the annual event go to the Niagara Community Foundation, which grants money to local charities through an $11 million endowment fund.
A Cuvée En Route weekend passport tasting program takes place at 39 participating wineries. For details, go to
www.cuvee.ca. Passports cost $30 and can be purchased at participating wineries.
