Niagara And Surrounding Area

Dipson Theatres, great movies & close by

Great Movies At Dipson Theatres Once Niagara on the Lake's Shaw Festival reverts to live theatre in March-April after their winter film series, it's difficult for us in Niagara to access foreign and independent films of any worth; however, if you enjoy good movies, the kind that one encounters each season at TIFF, the acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival, (but don't care to drive all the way to Toronto), I suggest two nearby Buffalo-area theatres that will save you time and money. And when you go, the bonus is that chances are pretty good you will enjoy almost a private screening. Seriously. The most patrons encountered during my many years of viewing is approximately 10-12! I do not know how they keep these theatres going, but I'm appreciative that somehow they survive. They are dated, there is no stadium seating, and the speakers do not blow your eardrums out, but that's a good thing, right?

The Amherst looms directly across from the University of Buffalo's old campus on Main St. The Eastern Hills Cinema is in Williamsville, out a wee bit, but actually closer if crossing either at the Lewiston or Niagara Falls bridges. Last week at the Amherst, I took in the 2010 film Of Gods and Men, written and directed by Xavier Beauvois the true story of a small group of Trappist monks under threat by fundamentalist terrorists. The monks are stationed amongst an impoverished Algerian community and must soul search (literally) whether to leave or Of Gods and Men stay. It's an amazing examination of how spirit vacillates, alternately weakening then strengthening under extreme duress, and most appropriate for troubled contemporary times with desperate people in the Middle East and Africa seeking freedom amidst the tyranny of those who would control them by force.

Which leads nicely to a pamphlet that I serendipitously picked up at the Amherst concerning the 26th annual Buffalo International Jewish Film Festival which officially opens Saturday evening, May 14 - May 19, 2011. All details including films and schedule are at: http://bijff.com/
