Movie Stars and a local Writer/Producer Spotted on Clifton Hill
Actors Matt Dillon and Kurt Russell are filming scenes around Clifton Hill and other sites in Niagara Falls, which serves as the backdrop for the movie "
The Black Mark." The movie, directed by Jonathan Sobol, is due to be released next year. Clifton Hill and Niagara Falls served as the backdrop for other movies including "
Superman II" and "
Camilla."
I'm proud that Jonathan, or as we called him then, Jon, was a member of my
Council on World Affairs team at A. N. Myer S.S. in Niagara Falls where he competed successfully as a debater at Harvard, New York City and at other venues.
Russell plays a semi-retired thief and daredevil, convinced by his brother, (Dillon) to take part in one last heist, a priceless historical book on display in Niagara Falls. Subplots concern another plan and theft that Dillon also wants to pull off.
Jonathan has been a full-time screenwriter for the past several years and was selected as one of Canada's "Ten to Watch" by Playback magazine in 2006. He sold the very first feature screenplay he wrote (
Citizen Duane, 2007) which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival and has played around the world.
Congratulations Jon, and father Peter who was a Niagara Regional Councillor and art teacher at Myer, must be very proud as well!
