Movies at the Shaw Festival
The Shaw Festival Theatre, through its partnership with The Film Circuit, a branch of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), has announced its sixth annual Festival Film Series line-up.
This year's Festival Film Series launches with the screening of Mao's Last Dancer on December 4 at 3 p.m. The Festival Film Series will also be accompanied by a six film documentary series beginning January 14 with Joan Rivers - A Piece of Work. Feature films are screened on Saturdays at 3 p.m. and documentaries are scheduled for Fridays at 5:30 p.m. All films will be screened at the Festival Theatre; seating is general admission.
Tickets are $11 per film. A twelve-film Festival Film Pass is available for $115 per person, or a nine-film "Stocking Stuffer" is available for $90. A Festival Documentary Pass for six films is $60. All prices include HST. Advance tickets are available now and can be purchased at the Shaw Festival Box Office or by calling 1-800-511-SHAW (7429) or locally at 905-468-2172.
I viewed two selections earlier in Buffalo - The Secret In Their Eyes and The Ghost Writer. Secret is an Argentinean film involving a retired legal counsellor who writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior - both of which still haunt him decades later. It's a powerful film that remains with you for days. I intend to see it again and perhaps also The Ghost Writer which is not as powerful, but nonetheless, provides interesting parallels with Britain's Tony Blair during the Iraq war.
